The Construction of Social Bonds. A Relational Theory of Globalisation, Organizations and Society.

The purpose of this book is to demonstrate how theories about organizations are necessary for the development of a relational sociology and an explanation of globalization and social change. The relational theory presented here is inspired by Max Weber and Georg Simmel and recognizes organizations as relationships. The construction of social bonds binds people to relationships and turns their actions into bonded actions. Social bonds are constructed through different combinations of organization, institution, and reciprocity.

This book examines bonds in intimate relationships and in such partially organized relationships as street gangs, brotherhoods, and social movements. Classical organization theory is given a relational interpretation here by being linked to five organizational elements: membership, rules, monitoring, sanctions, and hierarchy. The analysis is illustrated with examples of organizations ranging from rock groups and mafias, to global organizations such as IKEA and Google, to meta-organizations such as FIFA and the Internet Society.
