A major part my research focuses on a societal process that is commonly referred to as mediatization and the consequences this process has for the way public sector organizations operate and are governed. This work takes place along two paths: 1) mediatization as a result of an increased number of organizational activities and preferences that change the way organizations and their members understand and conduct their activities; and 2) mediatization as an institutional process that fundamentally changes the conditions for relations within and between organizations in various fields or societal sectors such as higher education and research, public administration or welfare.
Relatedly, I’m also interested in emergence and spread of status-oriented tools and activities such as prizes, awards, rankings, participation in major media-events, and how these can be understood as a part of general organizing and governance. In this context I’m curious about the relationships between prizes, media-events and news production – both from a perspective of structuring specific fields (e.g. publishing, education, politics), and how production and proliferation of prizes influences the processes in which news are produced.
A more recent focus of my work is on stimulating interest for management knowledge generated locally within and between public sector organizations to question and denaturalize the superiority of popular management wisdom and practices in private, public and third sector organizations.
During my time at SCORE I wish to finalize a number of the publications that my collogues and I are currently working on – among others a book on Mediatization of the Swedish Elderly Care. I would also like to work on a couple of research applications – the first one on the role of prizes & awards on organizing of publishing and film industry, and the second on the emergence and travel of ‘marginalized’ management ideas.
As I believe that research of any kind is truly a collective activity I hope that SCORE will offer a stimulating and engaging environment where I can exchange thoughts and ideas that will enrich not only mine but also others’ research.
